Index Page Person Academics Select Tops	Arvids Kaulins and Valda Kaulins in Lincoln, Nebraska 1956 - 1963. Dad (Arvids) and Mom (Valda) going out somewhere between 1956 - 1963. I like this photo because it is so happy. Dad has taken to wearing long ties and mom has on one of her beloved starry polkadot dresses, most of which she always designed and made herself. Dad (a Libra, October 1, 1914, old style) was the flamboyant one and Mom (a Capricorn, January 16, 1924) was conservative. I remember going along to select the draperies in the background. It was important that they represented nature and had trees depicted. Essentially, the draperies had the same basic thematic design as background scenery which Dad used to paint in Latvia for the National Opera performances. Our backgrounds are very strong influences on our later character and tastes, even in household and interior decorating matters.
