Andis Kaulins and greater family in Lincoln, Nebraska 1955.  Mom, Dad Inta and Aunt Lucy in the back. Andis, grandfather Vilis, Sarmite, grandmother Berta and Arv in the front. Grandfather Vilis, who hailed from near Daugavpils (Daugmales pagasts, Salnas) passed away at age 85 in 1969. He often took us for long walks in parks, commenting on the plants and flowers as he went along, something which I enjoy down to the present day. The brains in the family came from Berta, born in Ikskile (Uexkull) near Riga, who passed away at age 93 in 1977. Berta was wise and served as my father's counsel in her old age. On her 90th birthday, Berta's house was full of guests and congratulatory flowers, but she whispered to me privately to please remove the flowers in her bedroom, because as she said "I am allergic to some of them, you know, and couldn't sleep".
