Andis Kaulins, United States Marine Corps, 1969 ![]() This is my "Dress Blues" picture in the US Marine Corps Recruit Training Depot platoon album. I obtained a perfect score on the GCT military intelligence exam and was selected Platoon Honor Man and Series Honor Man among the recruits of an entering company of 400 men who had completed recruit training in boot camp. Men who have been through that boot camp themselves know the physical and mental fitness which is required. It was a very rich experience in my life and I learned many important things I had to learn sometime, so it was better to learn them earlier than later. The basic message was "You can do far more than you think you can." I thank all the men who participated, but especially those in my series, Series Commander 1stLt. R.A. Stewart, who I met some years later at Arizona State University Law School where he was studying law, Series Gunnery Sergeant E.L. Billups, Platoon Commander SSgt. J.R. Mora, Drill Instructor SSgt. R.W. Esslinger and Drill Instructor Sgt. A.L. Harris. If you think you are tough and looking to test your strength as a young man, try the U.S. Marine Corps and you will meet your match in men like those above. I also wish to thank Sergeant Cowert (as he always emphasized, "with a T"), who was the Platoon Commander of a sister platoon, and who took me aside when I was selected Series Honor Man and said to me as follows, word-for word: "Kaulins, I do not want to pin any stars on your chest, because I do not know if you are big enough to wear them, but you are the most open-minded recruit we have ever had here." That statement has been a motivation for me and my own academic open-mindedness and research for many years. One day I may be big enough to wear those stars, but I think it is a lifetime process getting there, and let me add, it is tough, not easy. Make no mistake about that.
