Andis Kaulins in Kiel 1974 - 1979 and Darmstadt 1979 - 1982

Andis Kaulins Kiel Darmstadt

From New York City I was called to Europe by Prof. Dr. Dietrich André Loeber.
I had met Loeber at Stanford, where he had been a Visiting Professor of Law
at the same time that I had been a student there.

Loeber's father had been a Supreme Court Justice on the Latvian Supreme Court
and my ancestors were Latvian. The common heritage led to friendship
and soon thereafter a unique opportunity arose to work on the law of the Baltic states.
There being no one else at that time available in the West with the requisite credentials,
I could scarcely turn the job down,
for it required fluent Latvian and English and a strong legal background.

So, I left for Europe to work on the Baltic project,
thinking I would return to New York City in not less than two years,
but the return to the United States never materialized.
Fate had other ideas, and I remained in Germany to stay,
first working on the ever-expanding project at the University of Kiel
and then taking an offer to work in the pharmaceutical industry starting in 1979.

The decision to come to Europe had not been a wrong one.
Loeber had perhaps correctly sensed that the then existing Soviet Union was weakening
and that renewed independence of the Baltic republics might be in the offing.

When that in fact happened about 15 years after my arrival in Europe,
the legal work Loeber and I had done in Kiel helped to pave the way
for establishment of the new legal system in the Baltic, and in Latvia in particular.
