Andis Kaulins (left) in the German countryside 1950 - You have to know your terrain. (I worked for the State of Nebraska Surveyors Office many years later, in the summer of 1967. Only two U.S. Presidents ever worked as surveyors, George Washington and Abraham Lincoln, and they are universally ranked by historians as the two best U.S. Presidents. There IS a connection.)  Valda (mom), Andis ("Andy", left) with brother Arveds ("Arv") and sister Sarmite ("Cebe"). Arvids (dad) of course is taking this masterful photograph. I still have the Leica camera he always used, and which was his technical pride and joy. He was a gifted artist and showman at heart, with a great love of opera. In fact, he had a strong voice and several theatre singing roles in the course of his life. In the days of his youth he even helped paint stage scenery for performances of the National Latvian Opera in Riga. Valda (mom) was the intellectual brains of the family.
